Indian marriage on Reddit: what 391,459 records show
Marriage in India, as written to strangers. Edition one of Prevow's annual research.

Prevow read 391,459 public Reddit records about getting married in India and logged 111 claims against what it found. 56 met the standard for publication as written. This page publishes 63, printing a claim in its narrowed wording where it turned out narrower, and counts the rest rather than hiding them. The full method is in the method note and the aggregate counts are in the data release.
Read this before the findings
What this is
A census of a conversation. 391,459 public records, 32,971 posts and 358,488 comments, published between 2024-09-02 and 2026-09-02, from 63 subreddits. It records what people say to strangers, anonymously, about getting married, in the places they go when they cannot say it to their family.
What this is not
Not a survey. There is no sampling frame, nobody was contacted, and nothing here was answered on request. Every number below is a count of corpus records. No number below is a percentage of Indians, of Indian couples, or of Indian marriages, and none may be rewritten as one.
The self-selection rule
Topic frequency in this corpus measures what generates enough distress, confusion or grievance to write about publicly. It does not measure what is common in Indian marriages, what is normal, or what is happening.
A person writes one of these records because something has gone wrong or is about to. Prevow tested that twice, searching the whole corpus for a conversation about intimacy that had been held and gone well, and for counselling that had changed a decision. Neither search returned a record. The honest reading of both nulls is not that these things do not happen. It is that a conversation that went well produces no post.
The three largest skews
- One community supplies more than four records in ten. r/Arrangedmarriage accounts for 41.964% of the 388,969 cleaned records, and Prevow's analysis labelled 15 of its 101 tested patterns as observations about a single community on exactly this ground.
- Two subreddits supply 47.51% of the posts. 13 subreddits contributed posts and no comments at all, so for those communities the corpus holds what was said and nothing of the reply.
- 32 of the 72 listed subreddits contributed nothing. They are the finance, mental-health, legal, divorce and general-India communities, so what this corpus holds about money, law and mental health is what a marriage forum says about them.
The findings that carry this report
Each finding below carries its supporting counts and the verdict Prevow's own adversarial testing gave it. Where a claim turned out narrower than it first looked, the narrowed wording is the one printed. What each verdict means is set out in the method note.
Premarital counselling appears in 82 of 391,459 records
82 of 391,459 records carry the topic label Premarital counselling (0.021%).
71 of the 82 are comments, and the characteristic record is a stranger telling another stranger, in a sentence or two, to go. First-hand accounts of having completed it: 4. That is below the traceability minimum, so Prevow's own testing marks that claim as failed rather than dropping it. The label sits on roughly one record in 4,774. The figure understates the subject: a corpus-wide search for a price attached to counselling returned 26 records, not one of them carrying the label. Corpus count; 82 supporting records across 11 subreddits; claim C-01.
The defensible statement is narrow: whatever this corpus records about Indian premarital decision-making, it does not record a population that discusses formal premarital preparation. It does not follow that such preparation is rare in India, only that it is nearly absent from what these communities write.
Where a career stops for a marriage, the corpus names the woman's
Where the corpus describes a career being paused, shortened or relocated for a marriage or a child, it is almost always the woman's.
Two frames drawn on different filters produced 14 supporting records and no counter-example. A corpus-wide search for a man doing the same returned 4 candidates, of which 1 survived reading; the other three were opened and rejected. One of the two supporting frames is 75% r/Arrangedmarriage, so it is the corpus-wide search that carries this claim, not the frame. Claims F12-CW4 (survives, 6 records) and F10-CH8 (one community, 8 records).
The intimacy conversation is deferred past the wedding
The intimacy conversation is deferred past the wedding, and the deferral is described as deliberate.
12 records across 8 subreddits support it, the widest spread of any pattern in the analysis. A corpus-wide search of all 391,459 records for the conversation having been held beforehand returned 0 records. A null result is weak evidence, because the phrasings may be wrong, so it is reported as a null and not as proof. Survives; 12 supporting records across 8 subreddits; claim F11-ID1.
Height and weight are form fields. Housework is not.
Income and physical measurements are both disclosed as labelled fields, early and unprompted, in the communities that use a listing template; 486 records give height or weight this way. What no template field in the corpus records is anything about conduct, expectation or history: no listing in the drawn frames carries a field for how housework will be divided, what either party expects of the other's family, or what has happened before.
This claim is narrower than Prevow first wrote it. The original said income was the one attribute disclosed with numeric precision, and a corpus-wide search falsified it: 486 records give height or weight as a labelled field, 404 posts and 82 comments. The sentence above is the rewritten one. Survives, narrowed; 7 supporting records across 3 subreddits; claim F12-CW6.
A parent holds a veto over a decision the couple has reached
A family objection to a match is described by the people inside it as absolute, and the threatened consequences are social and self-directed rather than material. It is not in fact absolute: 100 records across 16 subreddits describe a family being talked round, most often after a long period and usually reported as costly.
This is the strongest cross-frame claim in the analysis, and it too was narrowed. Across three separate decisions (whether to have children, whether the wife will work, and whether the match proceeds at all) the corpus records the couple reaching a position and a parent or parent-in-law holding a veto over it. 100 records describe that veto being reversed after sustained effort, so it is not absolute; no record in the drawn frames describes it being absent. Survives, narrowed; 8 supporting records across 5 subreddits; claim F13-FC3.
The match is scored numerically, and the score settles nothing
In r/Arrangedmarriage, which supplies 66.7% of the supporting records, the match is scored numerically, and the score does not settle anything.
One record carries a kundli match of 33 out of 36, with region, gotra, manglik status, education and both families' approval all checking out, and the match ends without a stated reason. No record read describes a horoscope score having predicted anything. One community; 6 supporting records across 3 subreddits; claim F13-FC2.
Asking a hard question carries a cost of its own
Asking is itself risky: the question can be judged, punished, or forwarded.
Two independently written corpus-wide searches for a hard question asked directly and received well returned 5 records and 2 records: 7 in total, out of 391,459. The claim is not that a direct question is never welcome. It is that this corpus almost never records one being welcome, which is as consistent with people not posting about conversations that went fine. Survives; 13 supporting records across 7 subreddits; claim F08-PQ4.
Nine subjects in the corpus have no label of their own
Prevow's taxonomy has 82 records under premarital counselling and no label at all for any of the nine subjects below, each of which is larger. These are lower bounds: they were counted by term search, which under-counts, especially where a record is written in transliterated Hindi.
- Disability (physical, neurological, psychiatric): 2,986 records across 39 subreddits.
- Second marriage / divorcee re-entering the search: 1,198 records across 31 subreddits.
- Height as a selection criterion: 925 records across 22 subreddits.
- Skin tone and colourism: 906 records across 30 subreddits.
- Asexuality: 546 records across 21 subreddits.
- Loneliness given as the reason for marrying: 449 records across 29 subreddits.
- Lavender marriage / marriage of convenience: 330 records across 16 subreddits.
- Private investigator or detective: 315 records across 16 subreddits.
- Deciding not to marry at all: 271 records across 22 subreddits.
The request is present and the outcome is absent
The recurring shape across nine separate frames is that people record asking what to ask, and almost never record what happened when they asked. Counselling is recommended 31 times in the 82 records that carry the label and completed 4. This is a shape in what gets written down, not a finding about what people do.
Findings by subject
Every other claim that met the publishable standard, in the order of Prevow's findings register. Claims that hold in one community name that community and its share inside the sentence. Claims that survived only in narrower form are printed in the narrowed wording.
What Prevow's corpus records about money
- Stating an income figure is treated as an act with consequences, so people withhold it, understate it, or inflate it, and each of those moves is described by someone else as deceit. Survives; 9 supporting records across 5 subreddits; claim F01-M1.
- Requests to plan money concretely are described as meeting defensiveness or avoidance, and the refusal is then read as the answer. Survives; 6 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F01-M4.
- Income difference is named as a hazard in both directions: earning much more and earning less are each described as producing control or resentment. Survives; 8 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F01-M5.
- Money is discussed through law (alimony, 498a, prenups, asset-shielding) and the legal frame is applied before any marriage exists. Survives; 9 supporting records across 6 subreddits; claim F01-M6.
- Advice, not events. The recurring instruction from commenters is to keep finances separate and verify independently, rather than to merge them. Survives; 6 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F01-M7.
What Prevow's corpus records about family and in-laws
- Whether the couple will live with his parents is stated as a decision item in its own right, and as a filter applied before other qualities are weighed. Survives; 11 supporting records across 5 subreddits; claim F02-FI1.
- Pre-marital assurances about family arrangements are described as reversing after the wedding, and this reversal is named as the thing people wish they had tested rather than trusted. Survives; 6 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F02-FI3.
- In r/Arrangedmarriage, which supplies 53.8% of the supporting records, parental pressure is described as a deadline, and the responses named are compliance, delay, sabotage or exit; never negotiation over the timing itself. One community; 13 supporting records across 6 subreddits; claim F02-FI4.
- The test people describe applying is not what the in-laws are like but whether the son will take a position against them; his failure to do so is read as decisive on its own. Survives; 6 supporting records across 3 subreddits; claim F02-FI5.
What Prevow's corpus records about doubt before a wedding
- The community's standing answer to a stated doubt is to end the engagement, and it is given fast, sometimes explicitly without reading the account. Survives; 15 supporting records across 6 subreddits; claim F03-D1.
- Whether a doubt is "cold feet" or a signal is contested, and the same evidence is read both ways by different commenters. Survives; 7 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F03-D4.
What Prevow's corpus records about warning signs
- The behaviours actually named are anger and control, and they are attributed to the prospect's parents as readily as to the prospect. Survives; 10 supporting records across 6 subreddits; claim F04-RF3.
- Checking a prospect is described as investigation: paid agencies, caller-ID lookups, social-media audits, and reading the other person's phone. Survives; 9 supporting records across 6 subreddits; claim F04-RF4.
- Posters ask whether they themselves are the red flag, and commenters sometimes answer yes. Survives; 7 supporting records across 5 subreddits; claim F04-RF5.
What Prevow's corpus records about what people say they missed
- The recurring structure of the reflection is concealment discovered after the wedding, of income, habits, health, debt, or past relationships. Survives; 10 supporting records across 6 subreddits; claim F05-WM1.
- Sexual and intimacy difficulty appears repeatedly and is described as something no pre-marital conversation had covered. Survives; 8 supporting records across 5 subreddits; claim F05-WM3.
- A minority of records describe structured pre-marital enquiry, and their authors attribute good outcomes to it. Survives; 6 supporting records across 6 subreddits; claim F05-WM4.
- People reporting good outcomes name luck as the operative factor, including those who also describe a method. Survives; 6 supporting records across 3 subreddits; claim F05-WM5.
- Where a good outcome is explained rather than attributed to luck, the variable named is elapsed time before the wedding, not the route. Survives; 6 supporting records across 3 subreddits; claim F05-WM6.
What Prevow's corpus records about selection criteria
- Criteria are stated as a list of measurable attributes (height, salary, degree, caste, complexion, horoscope) and are applied as a filter before any interaction. Survives; 12 supporting records across 7 subreddits; claim F06-CR1.
- Posters state plainly that the available attributes do not let them judge character, and ask the community what else to use. Survives; 6 supporting records across 3 subreddits; claim F06-CR2.
- The criteria are explicitly different for men and women, and participants name the asymmetry rather than only exhibiting it. Survives; 6 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F06-CR3.
- Advice, not events. Commenters argue against the checklist and for judgment, without supplying a procedure for judgment. Survives; 6 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F06-CR6.
What Prevow's corpus records about the process itself
- Basic mechanics of the process are asked about as unknown: who contacts whom, when families enter, where to meet, what to ask. Survives; 7 supporting records across 6 subreddits; claim F07-PR2.
- Whether to talk to several prospects at once has no settled norm, and the same behaviour is read as prudence by one party and bad faith by the other. Survives; 8 supporting records across 5 subreddits; claim F07-PR3.
What Prevow's corpus records about asking
- In r/Arrangedmarriage, which supplies 57.1% of the supporting records, the request is addressed to strangers, and the shape of the request is "give me the list". One community; 42 supporting records across 10 subreddits; claim F08-PQ1.
- In r/Arrangedmarriage, which supplies 58.3% of the supporting records, the request arrives with a date on it. One community; 12 supporting records across 5 subreddits; claim F08-PQ2.
- In r/Arrangedmarriage, which supplies 66.7% of the supporting records, the answer is not treated as evidence. One community; 9 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F08-PQ5.
- Substitutes are already in use, and they are named. Survives; 11 supporting records across 6 subreddits; claim F08-PQ9.
- In r/Arrangedmarriage, which supplies 66.7% of the supporting records, supplied lists exist inside the corpus and are contested when they appear. One community; 9 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F08-PQ11.
What Prevow's corpus records about premarital counselling
- In r/MuslimMarriage, which supplies 62.5% of the supporting records, where the corpus names a provider, the provider is a religious institution. One community; 8 supporting records across 3 subreddits; claim F09-PC3.
- In r/Arrangedmarriage, which supplies 57.1% of the supporting records, the instruments named are external and mostly not counselling. One community; 7 supporting records across 3 subreddits; claim F09-PC9.
What Prevow's corpus records about children
- Declaring childfree is described as leaving the arranged-marriage pool. Survives; 12 supporting records across 8 subreddits; claim F10-CH1.
- The timing is set by someone other than the couple. Survives; 6 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F10-CH5.
- The stated position is not stable, and both sides say so. Survives; 5 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F10-CH6.
- The parents are a party to the decision, and say so directly. Survives; 5 supporting records across 3 subreddits; claim F10-CH7.
- In r/Arrangedmarriage, which supplies 75% of the supporting records, children is discussed as a career question, and the career at risk is named as hers. One community; 8 supporting records across 3 subreddits; claim F10-CH8.
- Who will actually mind the child is a separate and later argument. Survives; 5 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F10-CH9.
What Prevow's corpus records about intimacy and disclosure
- In r/Arrangedmarriage, which supplies 66.7% of the supporting records, concealment is discussed as the practical alternative, sometimes explicitly. One community; 6 supporting records across 3 subreddits; claim F11-ID3.
- The past is interrogated, and the answer is not believed. Survives; 8 supporting records across 3 subreddits; claim F11-ID4.
What Prevow's corpus records about careers and the household
- Whether she will work after marriage is a question put to the man and his family, and answered by them. Survives; 6 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F12-CW1.
- Once both work, the housework is assigned by the earnings gap, and this is argued about openly. Survives; 8 supporting records across 5 subreddits; claim F12-CW3.
- Relocation is decided by whose job moves, and the answer is assumed. Survives; 6 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F12-CW5.
What Prevow's corpus records about faith, caste and matching
- In r/MuslimMarriage, which supplies 60% of the supporting records, what is negotiated in an interfaith or intercaste match is what the other person will give up. One community; 5 supporting records across 3 subreddits; claim F13-FC4.
What Prevow's corpus records about language
- The language switches at reported speech and at the moment of pressure. Survives; 7 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F14-LG2.
- Some writers translate for the reader and some do not, in the same subreddits. Survives; 6 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F14-LG3.
- Where someone reports independently verifying a matrimonial claim, the corpus records a discrepancy far more often than a confirmation: 6 discrepancies in the drawn frame and 3 confirmations corpus-wide against the searched phrasings. Whether that ratio reflects what verification finds or only what is worth posting cannot be settled inside the corpus, and the self-selection rule applies with full force. Survives, narrowed; 6 supporting records across 4 subreddits; claim F14-LG5.
What this corpus cannot answer
Six questions where no further collection from this source would help, because Reddit is the wrong instrument for them.
- What anything costs. 26 records name a price for counselling. There is no sampling frame over providers, no geography and no date normalisation, so a handful of prices is a set of anecdotes, not a price level.
- How long anything takes. No median engagement-to-wedding interval, search duration or number of meetings is available.
- What the non-posting majority thinks. This is the self-selection rule and it binds everything above.
- Whether anything changed over time. The window is two years and its final month is disclosed as possibly incomplete on 137 of the 1,948 logged searches. No trend claim is available.
- How representative any subreddit is. A finding that holds in one community and nowhere else is a finding about that community.
- Whether a claim someone made was true. Six records report checking a matrimonial claim and finding a discrepancy, against 3 records of a check confirming one. The corpus can say only that people who post about checking usually post about having found something.
What was withheld
55 of 111 logged claims did not meet the publishable standard as written. Some appear above in narrower form or with their community named; 48 are not on this page at all. Of the 55, 22 survived only in a narrower form, 15 hold in one community and not beyond it, 10 failed the traceability minimum, 4 could not be scored because the hold-out sample they needed did not exist, and 4 were written as counts rather than claims. Why each of the 48 is off this page is set out in the method note.
Why there are no quotations
Prevow's analysis selected 60 verbatim excerpts. None is published. Clearing one means a person opening its permalink and confirming the record is still live, still public, and still says what the analysis recorded it saying, and until that happens an excerpt does not appear. 18 records were also found carrying an identifier that the redaction pass missed, and every one of them is barred from publication permanently.
The data
The aggregate counts behind this page are published as CSV and JSON under CC BY 4.0, with a data package describing every field. Raw records are not published and will not be. Download them from the data release.

Prevow's analysis of 391,459 public Reddit records about marriage in India found premarital counselling mentioned in 82 of them, about one record in 4,774. In the same corpus, where a career is paused, shortened or relocated for a marriage or a child, 14 of 14 supporting records name the woman's, and a search for the male counter-example yielded 1.
These are two separate findings, and the research does not connect them. Each was tested on its own. Nothing in this analysis links the near-absence of formal preparation to whose career stops, and a sentence that implies one is not reporting this research. If you quote a figure, quote its denominator with it.
